So in my quest to find the perfect baby vehicle I found this. It's an 06 with 60 thousand miles on the clock for 14k. The exterior looks pretty straight from the photos. Interior is black leather and while showing some wear doesn't look bad at all
It is the 3.1 V6 with Quattro AWD which in theory should handle chicago winters just fine. Carfax also looks clean but it did fail emissions once or twice but as of its most recent test it passed. I was just wondering what I should look for when I go check it out Wednesday and if 14k is a fair asking price for it

Have you tested the Quattro system on snow and ice? How's the reliability

We've owned one since 2010 and it was CPO with 50k miles at the time. Today, it has 110k and had very little problems. We do not have the avant and 14k seems a bit high honestly. Nonetheless, you are gonna be happy with this car. This car is one of the most comfortable car I have ever driven, it handles the road like a charm, it's quiet, it's a beast in the snow. Ours is 8 years old and every one that have sat in it is completely blown away. This car is over engineered in every aspect and that is fantastic. If i was in your situation, it'd try to find one with a nicest colour and the amaretto leather interior and tech pack (push to start, cornering lights, etc..). We do have all the options except S-Line, we still have the sport seats and the leg extenders are really worth it. If you have kids, heated rear seats are pretty nice too.

Well we have one due in march so unless the heated seats could hear up a car seat I don't think the rear warmers are a huge deal haha. And personally I like the silver over black. My last couple cars have been fire engine red so I like that it's a little more subtle and as much as I'd love the tech pack this is already at the upper end of my budget but ill certainly keep an eye out

Same thing I always say - pay your mechanic (or find one here ) to go over it and see what it needs. The front end (around 90? I think ...) will be expensive on this car. Pay someone for their time so you get a no-nonsense evaluation.

The Quattro system is phenomenal on snow and ice, it's one of the big selling points of the car.
Reliability is about average, nowhere near as awful as people would have you think. Maintenance is obviously pricier than a mainstream car, but not out of the ordinary for a European car.

Yeah my cousin actually owns his own mechanic shop that's been in the family for a few generations so I'll probably take it to him on a test drive

Perfect. If you're facing 3K in repairs, you need to know that before you negotiate. Those cars are very complex - it's not dumb technology, so if the cousin weighs in, you're golden. And if he's wrong you can bring it up every year at Thanksgiving dinner, which itself is priceless.

I'd be a little apprehensive. It's seemingly been a city car it's entire life, according to the Carfax.
